What can you do with a Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro plan beyond chat? 12 jobs worth automating

Claude Max and ChatGPT Pro buy more than longer chats: Claude Code, Codex, background tasks and scheduled runs. What each plan includes, how its limits work, and 12 recurring jobs that turn spare usage into finished work, with a prompt to start one.

Beyond chat, both plans include a coding agent: Claude Code with Max, Codex with ChatGPT Pro. Both also include scheduled tasks that run without you. The usage you leave idle between sessions can do recurring jobs: a weekly report, inbox triage, a nightly code review. Here is what each plan includes, and 12 jobs worth handing over.

If you pay for one of these plans, most of your allowance probably goes unused. Max usage resets every five hours, with a weekly limit across all models (Anthropic). Hours you spend away from the chat window are hours the plan could be working.

What does Claude Max include besides chat?

Anthropic's Max plan article, checked 25 October 2026, lists:

  • More usage: 5x or 20x the Pro allowance, at $100 or $200 a month.
  • Claude Code: "for your terminal-based coding workflows with one unified subscription".
  • Longer, multi-step tasks: "Hand Claude work like reports, spreadsheets, and presentations, and it keeps going in the background."
  • Monthly API credits: these cover the Claude Agent SDK, claude -p, the Claude API and Managed Agents, not Claude Code itself (article 15036540, 7 October 2026).
  • Priority access to new models and features.

Claude Code also has cloud scheduled tasks on Pro and Max. They run a saved prompt on a schedule, from an API call or on a GitHub event, on Anthropic's cloud, so they "keep working when your laptop is closed".

What does ChatGPT Pro include besides chat?

On the OpenAI side, Codex comes with your ChatGPT plan when you sign in with ChatGPT. Codex and ChatGPT Work share your plan's usage (Codex authentication; Sign in with ChatGPT). The parts that turn a plan into recurring work:

  • Codex Cloud runs coding tasks in a cloud workspace that "can keep working while your computer is asleep" (docs).
  • Scheduled tasks run work on a schedule. On eligible plans they also run from Gmail, Slack and GitHub events (docs).
  • Sign in with ChatGPT lets listed partner apps, such as Devin, Warp and Notion, use your plan if you allow it. That use counts toward your plan limits.

OpenAI changes plan tiers and prices often, so check the current ChatGPT Pro page for this month's numbers.

How do you pick a job worth automating?

Use the test from what would you pay $20 to get automated?: a job you would pay someone $20 a month to do is worth setting up once. Then check four things:

  1. It repeats. Weekly or daily, with the same shape each time.
  2. Its inputs are reachable. A repo, an inbox, a Notion page, a website.
  3. Done is checkable. You can say in one sentence what a good result has.
  4. You can approve before it goes out. Anything that posts, sends or merges waits for you.

Anthropic's own scheduled-task examples include backlog maintenance, alert triage, bespoke code review, deploy checks and docs drift.

What do you still have to do yourself?

Each first-party option leaves some work with you:

  • Claude Code scheduled tasks work from a fresh clone of a GitHub repo, so anything else must come through connectors.
  • ChatGPT web tasks can't work in a folder on your computer.
  • Desktop tasks on either side need the computer on.
  • Nobody reads the result unless you do. A run that finished is not the same as a run that was right.

A hosted workspace such as Kavela takes some of that on. It runs Claude Code or Codex on your connected plan in its own cloud (docs). A reviewer checks every run against your checklist, and decisions wait for you as approvals. The rules for each company's side are in what Anthropic and OpenAI say about using a subscription for automation. The OpenAI side is not yet confirmed by OpenAI for third-party services.

How do you start one of these jobs on Kavela?

Connect your Claude or Codex plan once, then paste this into Kav's chat box and fill in the angle brackets:

Every Monday at 08:00 <your timezone>, write my weekly report from:
merged pull requests in <GitHub repo> and my notes in <Notion page link>.
Run it on my connected <Claude or Codex> plan.
A good report has: what shipped, what is blocked and why, and what is next, each with a link to its source. Drop anything without a source.
Send the draft to my approvals. After I approve it, email it to <recipients>.
Connect GitHub, Notion and Gmail when you need them.
Run it once now so I can check the first result, then set the routine.

You will still sign in to each service and approve the first results. With those accounts ready, setup takes about 10 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Is Claude Max worth it if I do not code?

Max includes background tasks for reports, spreadsheets and presentations, as well as Claude Code. Whether 5x or 20x Pro usage is worth $100 or $200 a month depends on how much of it you use. Recurring jobs are one way to use the hours you are not at the keyboard.

Can my ChatGPT Pro plan run tasks while I sleep?

Yes. Web scheduled tasks and Codex Cloud tasks run in OpenAI's cloud. Desktop tasks on a local project need the computer on.

Do the Claude Max API credits pay for Claude Code?

No. They cover the Agent SDK, claude -p, the Claude API and Managed Agents.

Will automated jobs eat into my chat usage?

Yes. On both sides, scheduled and automated work counts against the same plan limits as your chats.

Which is better for automation, Claude Max or ChatGPT Pro?

It depends on the job. Compare the cloud options for each in run Claude Code or Codex in the cloud on your own subscription.
